When this course began I was very worried I would not enjoy being in this class. I wasn't to excited on the fact the only time I was able to take this class it was a writing to learn course. I have already taken my writing to learn courses so I was a little frustrated that I was taking another. After finishing up this course I realized that I wasn't the best with keeping up with the blog assignments but I feel this was because I went into it with a negative attitude. If I would have had a better look on this being a writing to learn course I feel my writing grade would have been better.
I did love the freedom and creative opportunity that we were given in this class. In course I have taken in the past, the teacher tells you what your project should look like and the information. That is one thing I feel made me love this class, I was able to make choices and do my project over things that interested me. Having freedom in this class made me want to learn and know how to do new things with photoshop, indesign, and illustrator.
My favorite project that we did in this class would have to the the magazine project, I really enjoyed this project because I would love to work for a magazine some day. Before this project I had no clue that each magazine could have such different specs. I thought that all had the same basic layout and size. I learned the most on this project and it also was my favorite design.
After taking this class I feel my skills have improved a great deal. I have gained confidence in my work and believe that this class had made me have a better eye for the visual design of everything from appropriate fonts to packaging.
I would recommend this class to anyone interested in graphics, out of all the classes I have taken this is by far the best one

Final Project
For my final project I choose to make graduation announcements. My announcements are going to be a gate fold style to set the document i made 4x9 pages and placed them together. The purpose of this announcment was to let people know about my graduation party. The target audience for this is my family and friends, these are my target audience because these are the people who will be invited to my party. The call to action in my project is the RSVP to my parents for the party.
The overall size of my project is double sided, I chose to place 3 4x9 pages together and linked them on indesign. I have a .125 bleed with a .05 margin. the color I choose for this project with the Pitt State pantone colors, one on each side. The paper it is printed on is 80 pound coated. To produce 500 of these it would cost me around $260 dollars, this includes having them cut scored and folded.
The Master Image elements that I achieved for this project are a reverse, a illustrator element, and a vector image. The only copyright I have on this project is the picture on the back of my family, this was one of my own personal pictures.

Adobe Tutorial
For my adobe tutorial I choose a YouTube video that explains how to use the lasso tool and move a certain image from one pictures and place it one another.
Steps
1. Select image you want place on another background
2. Select Lasso tool (there are three different lasso tool, make sure you are the regular one)
3.Trace outline of selected image with the lasso tool, try to get a close to the image as possible
4. Use zoom tool to view areas that are either outside the outline or to inside.
5. To subtract something from the image you use option or Alt key, but doing this the Lasso tool has a minus sign by it.
6.Then around the area you went to far you retrace with the minus Lasso tool, making sure to connect back with the old area.
7.If part of the image is to far in you first make sure the Lasso tool is selected then press shift, the Lasso tool with now have a plus rather then a minus as it did before when retracing parts.
8. Start tracing on an area of the image that is place in the correct spot and then begin making your name line on the appointed spot on the image, end the Lasso tool on a select that is in place already (just like how you started) the new selection should then snap right into place.
9. Once the selected image is to your liking after changing things about with the Lasso manipulate functions with the add and subtract.
10.With image selected go to edit copy or command C
11. Then go to new picture and to edit paste of command V
12. Now your image from a previous picture is now placed into a new selected picture!

Master Image List
Bitmap Images also referred to as "line art images", bitmaps consist of only black and white pixels with no shades of gray. When scanning a signature or a ink drawn image, a bitmap is able to give you that sharp clean image with a high resolution. Since bitmaps tend to be small and compact they are able to have a high resoultion generally 600-1200ppi but are still capiable of having a small file size.
A Reverse is used when oppostie colors are being used in the production process.
Reverse printing is different from normal printing due to the fact that contrast is created on the paper. Here is an example of a reverse.

Vector art is made up of illustrator images which have been exported into EPS files.
Grayscale raster datasets contain values between 0 and 255,0 is black, 255 is white. The numbers inbetween are increasingly lighter shades of gray. Grayscale rasters have the abality to be saved as an illustrator file and be chnaged around in photoshop, after these steps is it then able t be placed into InDesign files.
Duotone rasters consist of two, three or four different color. Duotone are able to be created in photoshop but have the ability to be saved in several formats.
A silhouette raster is when you use a clipping path to select an object within an image that you want to appear on a different background in InDesign. All files for print are able to be every color mode but not RGB and is besed when saved as an .eps. Also the file should a minium of 300 resolution.
A full bleed raster is any image brought in from Photoshop that is going to bleed on all sides of the document. This can be in all colors modes but,RGB. Th image should be a minium of 300 ppi and saved as a .tiff or .eps.
A four color raster is a raster image which is in full color. This raster needs to be CMYK and 300 you can oable to save four color rasters as .tiff or flattened .eps file.
A screen tint is a block of color on an image or document that is made up of dots of color rather than a solid block of color.

Chapter 11&12
When placing image into InDesign you have a few options to choose from. The first is to use the rectangle frame tool and the second is it use the regular rectangle tool. Both ways vsn create shapes that are acccept graphics.
With drag and drop there are many options you have to choose from besides the regular file>place. The first method the book talks about allows you to drag diretly from a folder. This is done by placing your dragged file and InDeisgn right now to each other so you can directl place the contents into InDesign, this is very similar to file>place. Another method is to drag and drop using Adobe Bridge, Bridge allows you to nevigate to the slected folder then you can select multiple files and drag them stright into the InDesign page. The worst way to drag and drop is by taking an open image in Photoshop and dragging it directly into InDesign.
The Links panel in InDesign lets you see what images the program can't find and what images are modified. If InDesign contains graphics that have been changed around, moved or renamed the program is not able to see them, this is indicated by a red stop sign symbol appearing next to the link or links that cannot be found. Any graphic that has been modified and resaved with the same name, a yellow triangle will appear. When you trying to open a file in InDesign that has missing or modified links, an alert will appear. This alert gives you the option of updating those links.
Tranforming graphics has many options when scaling frames containing graphics. The first is to select the fram with the selection tool, then you can use the scale tool or the free transform tool to scale the frame and its contents. Another option is to enter percentage values in the x/y scale fields in the control panel. I feel the easiest way to scale is by pressing command+shift then drag the corner of the frame.
Creating drop shadows is simply adding a shadow behind the image, this are used to add emphasis on something. When adding drop shadows it is best to produce your own swatches so you know you are getting the

Swatches seem very boring and it can feel like you don't have many options to pick from but in reality that is anything but the truth. You should view the color panel as an informal mixing bowl for creating whatever color you desire. You are only able to specify CMYK, RGB, or lab colors with the color panel. Within the color panel you are able to create tints of spot colors. The number of color options are unlimited you just have to take time to find the perfect one.
An Ink Managers primary job is to fix spot-color errors by remapping extraneous colors to the correct links. The Ink Manager can be launched in several ways, the spearations preview panel menu is one way offered and the swatches panhel menu is another.

Direct Mail
Variable data printing is a customized type of printing in which a designer creates the main elements of a piece of mail and then certain aspects of each piece to match the target audience they are trying to reach. Sometimes the changes can be as as small as is the address and name, this is still considered
variable data no matter how small the change. My direct mail is done for my aunts bakery she does out of her home. The target audience for this piece is going to be send to people who are planning a wedding and the other one is send out to families. The purpose of the mailer is to increase business. My call to action is having people bring in the card to recieve a discount on their order. The trim size for this project is a 7x5 postcard with a .125" bleed on all sides
and a .25" margin. My final project will be printed on a 7x5 postcard, double
sided using a coated paper. The image I used for this project are from corbis.com a royality free website for use of their photos. The cost for this a PSU printing services for this piece is .35 cents for one.

Flatten or Layered- Flatten is where the image can not be changed and moved around, layered is where you are able to see all of the elements in a design.
Transparency- How see-through an image is. the value is shown in percentage in the opacity setting.
Creating a Path- The best way to create a path is to use the pen tool.
Duotones- is a picture that consisits only 2 colors, they are usually black and another color.
Chapter 10-Illustrator CS4 Production Tips
Artboards- These can be seen a notepads with you can mix and match your designs and ideas. Artboards are able to show you different options.

Resolution for Output- Printing has many different variable that are determined. The higher your lpi is you must have a even higher ppi so none of the image is lost.
Bleed Settings-Bleeds should usually be set for 1/4 inch, this will assure you artwork will bleed.
Simplify Complex Art-The best way to simplify complex art work remove any unnecessary points..
Clean Up- In Illustrator you are able to clean up drawings. first select Object menu > path > clean up. Clean up removes anything that is unneccessary.
Effects & Clipping Mask- The effects menu has two primary sections, which consist of Illustrator Effects and Photoshop Effects.
Transparency- The ability for how much of an object is able to be seen.
Linked & Embedded Images- When placing an a image in an Illustrator file you have to option to link or embed the images. When linking an image it results in a smaller file, embedding an image increases the file size .

Copyrights
Copyright laws are something that is taken very serious in written documents and images. To aquire a copyright, you have to go to the US government to pay for the copyright circle or trade stamp. No one can use documents, images, or anything else with copyright law on it without permission of the owner.

Defined by the text book postscript is a programming language used to describe the contents of a page that an imaging device such a laser printer, an imagesetter, or a platesetter can produce output.
Stated by Microsoft Typography. com TrueType is a digital font technology designed by Apple Computer, and now used by both Apple and Microsoft in their operating systems. Microsoft has distributed millions of quality TrueType fonts in hundreds of different styles, including them in its range of products and the popular TrueType Font Packs. These fonts are the easiest to on different systems because they have such a high quality.
OpenType is is a cross-platform font file format that Adobe and Microsoft collaborated together to form. Adobe converted their entire Adobe Type Library into this format, by doing this it now offers thousands of OpenType fonts.
Font families are font styles which share the same style and consist of the same characters. The changes that occur in a font family is just the format like changing the font to be bolder.
A glyph can be an alphabetic or numeric font or also can be other symbol that pictures an encoded character.
When looking at the term dfont I was a little confused at what the term ment, after researching and finfing out that they are systems fonts it began to make sence to me.Mac system fonts such as Monaco, and Charcoal and OS X system fonts like Helvetica and Times Roman are referred to as dfonts.
Multiple Master fonts are usually customizable PostScrpt font which then give the designer multiple choices including weights, angles and widths of the same font.
When looking at licensing anything that is not yours you have to get permittion to use
File naming should be done like Ohmes_notepad.ind

Copyright for Designers
www.copyright.gov defines copyright as a form of protection provided by the laws of the United Stated (title 17, U.S Code) to the authors of the "original works of authorship" including dramatic, musical, artistic and certain intellectual works. Copyright protection is able to be used on both published and unpublished works. Copyright is something that needs to be handled in a very strict manner. If someone takes someone else piece of work and claims it as their own they are breaking copyright laws. Copyright laws for images depend on the source of the image, some websites allow you to use their images for free as long as you source where you got the images. Other websites have you subscribe and pay money to be access to their images. With fonts the copyrights are given when you buy the programs, some websites like dafont.com allow you to download fonts but when you buy Microsoft word there are already fonts downloaded onto the programs
Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions; literary and artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. Intellectual property has patents for things such as inventions, trademarks, industrial design and even can be used for geographical indications.
When you are viewing online contents you needs to be careful to make sure the items are you using has safe copyright on them so you are able to use these materials for your own personal needs.

While looking through chapter four I came upon the section titled appropriate image formats for print. In this section it talked about how TIFF9 tagged image file format) is the most widely suported image file format. TIFF can be imported into Illustraor, Indesign, QuarkXpress, Microsoft world and some text editors. TIFF's is able to support multiple laters as well as RGB and CMYK. The second most common form is EPS an EPS can contain vector art, raster image or a combination of raster and vector content.
Inappropriate Image formats for print consist of PNG ( Portable Network Graphics) which are used for onscreen and web use. BMP, GIF and JPEG are also not formats that are good to use when printing.
A pixel is a shorthand for picture element, this is this the smallest unit of information in a digitized image. Though images may look smooth on the screen, if you really zoom in you will see there are a ton of tiny squared that make up the image.
The difference between a JPG and RAW file is mostly in the compression. With JPEG the image is compressed. Raw is an image taken from a digital camera, this is mainly done with DSLR cameras. Raw has little or no compression.
For PPI (pixels per inch) resolution an onscreen image consist of 72ppi and print image is 300ppi.
Bitmap contain only black and white pixels ranging from 600-1200ppi which make clean images. The bitmap images are most common when scanning.
When images are cropped you should leave extra space use to prevent any errors. Problems can always occur so before you cropp an image you should make sure you have an the original image saved. When rotating images you should only rotate in 90 degree rotations so that no details are lost from the image.

Transparency Tip- "Although Illustrator, InDesign, and
QuarkPress accept and correctly handle opacity settings in a placed Photoshop
native file, they do not correctly handle blending modes in a Photoshop file.
The most common example is a drop shadow created in Photoshop. While the shadow
will correctly darken image content beneath it in Photoshop, it will knock out
of content beneath it in InDesign or Illustrator. The result is an anemic and
unrealistic gray shadow-not what you want...A simple solution is to omit the
shadow in Photoshop, and generate it instead in InDesgin or Illustrator, whose
shadows behave correctly, darkening content beneath the shadows as you
intended." Page 89, BOOK)
Vector Graphics- vectors ahave no pixels and are able to be altered without scaling restrictions, the image does also not loss any of the clearness.
Vector file formats- Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) with EPS you are able to save a vector in its original file format, it may also be saved as a PDF.
Embedding fonts make it so a font can be viewed and printed but it is not able to be edited.
Outlining Text- This fonts have certain information called hinting; hinting refines the display and printing of the text. When converting the text into an outline form it totally get rid of the hinting effect.
Simplify path is where you make fewer points onto a vector object so the object has cleaner and smoother lines.

Finishing Processes- There are several different types of finishing choices
when it comes to finishing processes. Finishing processes are generally done
after the print is complete. This is done to add a higher quality to the print,
some of the types of finishing are laminating, mounting, image transfer,
trimming and coating.
Folding Dummy- A folding dummy is a handmade replica or a close example of a printed piece to show a printer what the final work should look like.
Imagesetter- An imagesetter is a very expensive machine that has several different sizes and formats. This typesetting device which is able to produce high-resolution output directly from a computer file, then transfers electronic text and graphics directly to film, plates, or photo-sensitive paper.
Pica vs Point- Pica is a standard of measurement and every pica equals 1/6 inch. Point is a measurement unit equal to 1/72 of an inch. Every pica equals 12 points and every 72 points equals one inch.
Die Cutting- Die cutting is a process in which a metal die with sharp edges is pressed into the material to cut the object. Materials that generally get due cut are metal and paper.
The importance of Registration – It is important to register because it helps to protect brand name and image. Registering helps to prevent others from using brand logo’s or icons.
Purpose of RIP- RIP which stands for raster image processor is used in printing systems to produce bitmaps and which are then sent to the printer.
VDP- VDP stands for variable data printing; this is a form of digital printing. In VDP you are able to have demand printing which allows elements such as text, images or graphics to be changed from one printed piece to the next without having to go back into the whole process of changing the piece completely. This helps in keeping the printing process timely and efficient.
Two color print job- Most two color printing jobs are generally used for logos and letterheads.
DPI, LPI, PPI- DPI stands of dot per inch which is used to measure the resolution of an image both on screen and in print. LPI stands for lines per inch this is used to measure the resolution of images printed in halftones. PPI stands for pixels per inch which is used to measures the number of pixels per line per inch in a digital photo.

CMYK stands for the four main colors; cyan, magenta, yellow and
key which is black. These are used in the CMYK color mode that is used in the
color printing process.
Spot coloring is when specially mixed inks come
together in a rainbow of colors, including some special types of ink. CMYK
creates color by layering CMYK in different percentages on the page, spot
colors are pre-mixed and then applied separately to the page.

QR code which is short for quick response is used to take pieces of information from a transitory media and put it in to your cell phone. QR codes can be found on many different types of advertising such as magazines, postcard, or even on web pages. QR codes are used to save information on a your cell phone, many QR codes have deals like promotions or coupons.
To generate a QR code you use websites such as Kaywa. These take seconds to generate on smart phone such as an iphone or an Android to find and install the reader. Google has a tool as well that will generate the QR codes.
A QR can be tracked by the use of websites, google has a tracking modules (or UTM) parameters appended to the URL so that you can track the QR campaign in Google Analytics.
Reasons people use QR code is to make information easy to access for consumers. QR codes are very helpful to companies when they are trying to send out important information to a large audience.

Checklist
- The artwork is designed at the size it's going to be printed.
- Does your document have the proper bleed setting?
- You've removed any extraneous elements from the pasteboard.
- Your "screened" elements are set at no lower than 15% opacity (any lower and they're practically invisible).
- You've supplied all screen and printer fonts used in your file and any image files imported in your document? If you properly pre-flighted and packaged your file, the answer should be yes.You can also choose to outline your fonts, if you're not allowed to share the font. However, we prefer having the actual font file so we can make changes to the text if needed.
- Have you verified that ALL COLORS used in your document used are set to CMYK values for proper separation? Please remove all unused colors from your document.
- Make sure color graphics (eps, tiff, etc.) have been converted from RGB to CMYK and scanned at proper resolution (300 dpi). NOTE: Do not use compression when saving images. Save scanned images as .tiff files. Make sure all black and white images are set to true "Grayscale".
- Have you replaced large black areas with Rich Black (75% Cyan/50% Magenta/50% Yellow/100% Black) to make them appear more solid?
- Did you check the spelling and grammar of your document?
- Did a friend or co-worker check the spelling and grammar of your document?
- Is your page layout program supported by Action Printing?
- Have you backed up your files on your hard drive or other media in case of file damage? If not, please do so now.
- Have you given us a printed, physical copy? Please provide us with a hard copy either printed, faxed, or e-mailed. This way, we know what the finished project should look like and we can check for inconsistencies.
