Copyright for Designers

www.copyright.gov defines copyright as a form of protection provided by the laws of the United Stated (title 17, U.S Code) to the authors of the "original works of authorship" including dramatic, musical, artistic and certain intellectual works. Copyright protection is able to be used on both published and unpublished works. Copyright is something that needs to be handled in a very strict manner. If someone takes someone else piece of work and claims it as their own they are breaking copyright laws. Copyright laws for images depend on the source of the image, some websites allow you to use their images for free as long as you source where you got the images. Other websites have you subscribe and pay money to be access to their images. With fonts the copyrights are given when you buy the programs, some websites like dafont.com allow you to download fonts but when you buy Microsoft word there are already fonts downloaded onto the programs
Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions; literary and artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. Intellectual property has patents for things such as inventions, trademarks, industrial design and even can be used for geographical indications.

When you are viewing online contents you needs to be careful to make sure the items are you using has safe copyright on them so you are able to use these materials for your own personal needs.
